Daughter of the Sun
by Zoe Kalo

Sixteen-year-old Trinity was born during a solar eclipse and left at the doorsteps of a convent along with a torn piece of papyrus covered with ancient symbols. Raised by nuns in the English countryside, she leads a quiet life until she’s whisked away to the Island of Cats and a grandmother she never knew.
But before they can get to know each other, her grandmother dies. All that Trinity has left is a mysterious eye-shaped ring. And a thousand grieving cats. As Trinity tries to solve the enigma of the torn papyrus, she discovers a world of bloody sacrifices and evil curses, and a prophecy that points to her and her new feline abilities.
Unwilling to believe that any of the Egyptian gods could still be alive, Trinity turns to eighteen-year-old Seth and is instantly pulled into a vortex of sensations that forces her to confront her true self—and a horrifying destiny.

“If it’s meant to be, it’ll be. We all have a destiny. I really believe that. And it’s time for you to fulfill yours, Trinity.”
This adventurous story races through 330 pages non-stop or maybe it is my curiosity, as each page reveals more mystery. Your first clue about this awesome book is the fabulous cover! With Egyptian pyramids and a cat eye in the center-this cover depicts the essence of this tale. I was captivated by the way Zoe describes so well the island that is to be home for the main character, Trinity. She also weaves many different story lines into the life of Trinity-her upbringing, her heritage, her friends and her enemies, and her cat.
For Trinity, growing up in a strict convent, the struggles of leaving the only home she’s known are many. She is thrust into a family she does not know and she needs to find her place in her new home and she is discovering all that she has not experienced while living among the nunnery. Trinity doesn’t let circumstances stop her. She investigates her family’s mysterious heritage and with little guidance. She charms the islanders. She helps carry on her grandmother’s wishes - all mostly on her own with her one real source of comfort and support being her cat. If you are not a fan of cats (really??) this story may change your mind. Cats are the main focus throughout this tale.
Rich with culture and history, mystery and adventure from the first page to the final page, Zoe’s story will sweep you off of your feet (or seat). Everything about this book is so well done! The cover, the story and check out her website for the next installment of Cult of the Cat! You will want to order the next book as soon as it is available-this first installment does not answer all of the burning questions that Trinity has uncovered. Looking forward to book two!
